This lecture will discuss some of the myths and misunderstandings about this anxiety disorder.  For example, a Finnish study showed that dogs with separation anxiety were more likely to be found in homes where the owners were detached versus those homes that were very warm and fuzzy with their pets.  Also-in the past, it was common advice to "mix up the cues of departures" such as put your coat on but don't leave, or keep your pajamas on and walk out of the house.   We now know this does not help and may make your dog even more nervous and triggered.  I can review my treatment plans which include setting the dog up for success in many ways with home preparation as well as medication, and the pros and cons of the popular training programs for Separation Anxiety.
